The Forum is a vibrant consortium of Welsh companies, University research groups, users and support organisations dedicated to the development and profitability of the opto-electronics sector in Wales and internationally.  Our objectives are to bring people and organisations together, thereby facilitating the process of research, technology transfer and generating business opportunities.  Membership is also offered to non-Welsh based organisations with some minor restrictions.

Members are currently experiencing technical and commercial benefit from a range of Forum activities.

MEETINGS

A regular programme of technical meetings with internationally recognised lead speakers, exhibition facilities for members and congenial networking opportunities.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Specific seminars providing information on UK, Welsh and European funding opportunities.  Opportunities for collaborative ventures between members companies, and between businesses and academia following contact via the Forum.

CLUSTER DEVELOPMENT

Technium OpTIC  - A major programme to develop the opto-electronic cluster in North Wales which will provide technical and commercial benefits for members.
 

NEWS

A regular Newsletter including articles from members promoting their new products, research achievements and events.

INTERNET

A dedicated Web site with details of Forum activities, profiles of member organisations and areas of expertise & interest, including hypertext links to member’s own sites. 

PROMOTION

 

 

 

 

 

Free entry in the Welsh Opto-electronic sector directory published in hard copy, CD-ROM and on the Forum Web Site.

Opportunities for member’s activities to be featured in the national and local press.  Subsidised exhibition space at national & international exhibitions.

Highlighted in Wales as a Flagship project within the Wales Regional Plan.

Part of the DTI’s UK Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network (PKTN), where the main objective is to improve innovation performance by increasing the depth and breadth of technology transfer in UK based businesses.  This will lead to a number of technology and market events and the opportunity for organisations to gain a higher profile nationally and internationally.  An important part of this is to exploit Welsh “know how” and expertise on the PKTN portal.

The launch of Welsh Opto-electronics Forum’s Photonics Academy in 2006 Addressing a learning strategy for the sector to encompass the following areas:  

1.       Photonics Awareness 11-14 (Schools) 

2.       14-19 decisions influencing activity (Schools - 14-19 Welsh Pathways    
          agenda)

3.       Technician Training, core candidates 16-25 

4.       Graduate and Post-graduate

5.       Ad hoc and CPD training for Welsh based companies and individuals

INFLUENCE

 Represented on national and international committees in the industry sector. 

Opportunity to make an input to national strategies and funding policies.
